Living with Landscapes
“Adaptation with Coasts and Arid Lands”

Marsa Matruh and Siwa
1-5 November 2009

The organizing team of the “Living with Landscapes’’ international symposiums, would like to invite you to its second gathering for more of the same excellent academic interaction, networking and exchange of experience and achievement regarding Man’s ingenious ways of adaptation with different landscapes and geomorphic environments. We have chosen even more distinctive settings for you to visit this time. The unique Mediterranean metropolis of Marsa Matruh, with its warm climate, beach-resorts, and lovely restaurants, and the untarnished natural beauty of the Siwa oasis located deep inside the vast Western Egyptian desert, are not only two very distinguished places, but offer, contrastingly, very enjoyable academic experiences as well.
As usual, oral and poster presentations will be orchestrated amongst field workshops and desert excursions for the maximum academic benefit and enjoyment of all delegates and attendees. Our goal is to offer you unique opportunities for academic exposure and experience.

Objectives:
Definitions of Man's methods of integration within various landscapes should help our understanding of the interactive nature of the relationship between geomorphology and human activities. Of particular interest here are investigations of coastal and desert regions, with their geomorphic processes and strong relationships to Global Environmental Change. While continually offering mankind a variety of unique goods and services, Oases, as micro-geo-systems, are very sensitive to Global change.

Topics:
1.Methods of adaptation in conditions of climatic change, and coastal and desert landform evolution.
2.Geodiversity as a link between humans, their culture and the landscape.
3.Geodiversity planning and management in arid and coastal regions.
4.Conservation of Earth Heritage in arid and coastal landscapes.
5.Deserts and oases as cultural landscapes in the past, present and future.
6.Man and coastal geomorphology.
7.Man and arid landscapes
8.Managing water resources in desert landscapes.
9.karst in arid regions.

Languages:
The Official Languages of the symposium will be English and Arabic.
